Children's Dental Health Month is one of the many
ways we help the Iowa City community.
Elementary School Visits
Since 1989, River City Dental Care®, has gone out to
the elementary schools in the Iowa City Community School
District (ICCSD) to help promote
Children's Dental Health Month. It started
with Dr. Brad Stiles, DDS, going to his daughter's kindergarten
class at Longfellow Elementary to explain the importance
of taking good care of your teeth. The Children's Dental
Health Month visits
have expanded since then. Currently the staff
of River City Dental Care® takes
turns presenting half hour sessions to the pre-K, Kindergarten,
First
and Second grade classes in most of the elementary schools
in the district. There are 17 elementary schools in the
district so we see a lot of children!
An "invitation" is sent to each principal to
have the teachers contact our hygiene manager, Tammy Bay,
RDH if they are interested in scheduling a presentation.
Many of the teachers have welcomed these presentations
and request to be on the list each year. Some have worked
this presentation into their curriculum on health.
The children are shown proper brushing and flossing techniques
by one of our dentists, hygienists, or dental assistants.
They talk about "healthy snacks" that help promote
good oral health, they are shown a short video put out
by the American Dental Association, showing "Dudley
the Dinosaur" visiting his dentist. And the session
closes with each child receiving a toothbrush, floss, and
coloring book. |
